Federer cruises into Wimbledon last eight

Defending champion Roger Federer sauntered into the Wimbledon quarter-finals with a dominant display, beating Adrian Mannarino 6-0 7-5 6-4.

An eight-time winner of the men’s singles at the All England Club, Federer was an overwhelming favourite against the 22nd seed and never looked like falling victim to a huge upset.

Mannarino won only two points in the first five games and the opening set was brought to an end inside just 16 minutes.

The underdog was far more competitive thereafter, but Federer still triumphed with ease and will face Gael Monfils or Kevin Anderson in his 16th Wimbledon quarter-final.

Federer has now won 32 consecutive sets at SW19, leaving him just two short of his best run in the tournament, achieved across 2005 and 2006.

“It was great to win that first set so quickly,” Federer told the BBC. “I always had that lead in the bag and then it was important for me to stay focused. I knew he was much better than that first set and he showed that.”

Centre Court will rarely have played host to a more one-sided set than Monday’s opener, in which Mannarino was embarrassingly outclassed for the most part.

However, the Frenchman did manage to earn a break point – the first Federer had faced in the tournament – as his opponent served for the set and then dug deep to stay with the Swiss in the second.

Having saved a host of break points, Mannarino eventually faltered at 5-5 and looked to be suffering from discomfort in his right groin as Federer held to love to open up a two-set lead.

Mannarino was nevertheless able to frustrate his illustrious rival in the third set, even threatening to break for a 5-3 lead.

Yet Federer quickly snuffed out the danger and broke in the next game before rounding off the match in typically ruthless fashion.
