Cavani banned, fined for Instagram post
Manchester United forward, Edinson Cavani has been slapped with a 3 game ban and a hefty fine of £100,000 after a post on his Instagram page got him in hot water with the English FA. The post was put up on November 29th following a narrow 3-2 win against Southampton in the league, a game in which Cavani scored twice, including a late winner.
The post was flagged by the FA as being racist after a racist term was used. However, Cavani has since deleted and apologized for the post, which he claimed had no racist undertone as he was only responding to a congratulatory message from a close friend. As a result of the ban, Cavani would now miss the next three Manchester United games against Aston Villa in the league, Manchester City in the Carabao Cup semi-final and Watford in the FA Cup.
Manchester United have publicly defended their striker, stating that his words were misconstrued and that he meant to harm with his post, and stated that in spite of his innocence, he has chosen not to appeal the decision as a result of his respect for the fight against racism in football.
