Defending champions, Arsenal were dumped out of the FA Cup by fellow Premier League side, Southampton after they lost 1-0 away at the St. Mary’s Stadium in the fourth round of the competition.
Mikel Arteta’s side found themselves trailing in the 24th minute when a Kyle Walker-Peters ball struck Arsenal’s Brazilian defender, Gabriel Magalhaes and beat goalkeeper, Bernd Leno. Arsenal tried to find a way back into the game, but in the absence of talismanic captain, Pierre Emerick Aubameyang, they could not breach the Saints defence.
The result ensured that Arsenal cannot repeat their feat from 6 years ago when they successfully defended the FA Cup title under Arsene Wenger. The Gunners will now turn their focus to the league and Europa League, and Southampton are through to face Wolverhampton Wanderers in the fifth round of the FA Cup.
