Manchester United hosted Southampton in Matchday 22 of the Premier League on Tuesday at Old Trafford looking to apply pressure on leaders Manchester City. They ran out 9-0 winners after a comprehensive trouncing of Southampton.
Southampton looked doomed from the second minute when Alex Jankewitz was shown a red card for a dangerous tackle on Scott McTominay. United took the lead shortly after as Aaron Wan-Bissaka finished off a Luke Shaw pass. Marcus Rashford added a second before Jan Bednarek scored an own goal to make it three nil. Edinson Cavani headed home another brilliant Shaw delivery to make it 4-0 at half time.
They continued in the same vein in the second half as substitute Anthony Martial scored to make it 5 before a long range belter from McTominay made it 6. Bruno Fernandes was not to be left out of the party as he made it 7 from the penalty spot. Martial completed a brace in the 90th minute to make it 8 before Daniel James scored with virtually the last kick of the game to make it 9-0. Southampton defender, Jan Bednarek got his marching orders in the 86th minute.
The result means that Manchester United have now scored the most goals in this season’s English Premier League, and have equalled the biggest win of the Premier League era just like Leicester City did against these same opponents last season. For Southampton, it is a huge punishment because the early red card never really let them get into the game. United remain in second place on 44 points, only behind Manchester City on goal difference while Southampton slip down to 12th, well clear of the relegation dogfight.
