England booked their place in the quarterfinals of Euro 2020 thanks to a 2-0 victory over long-time nemesis Germany at Wembley Stadium. The Three Lions will face Ukraine in the last 8 after the Andriy Shevchenko-led side defeated Sweden 2-1 to progress to the last 8.
In a tense match at Wembley, Raheem Sterling finished off a fine team move from close range to give England the lead in front of their fans after 75 minutes. Few minutes later, Sterling gave up the ball, and suddenly, Thomas Muller was through on goal, but the veteran could only hit the ball wide of the goal when faced by the goalkeeper. Four minutes from the end of regulation time, England captain Harry Kane stepped up to deliver a sucker punch to the Germans. Jack Grealish played an inviting ball across the six-yard line, and Kane stooped to get his header into the goal brilliantly. The final whistle sounded to huge roars from the stadium; it was England’s first knockout win at the Euros since 1996, and their first competitive victory over Germany since 1966.
Ukraine and Sweden served up a classic Round of 16 encounter at Hampden Park. Manchester City full-back Oleksandr Zinchenko opened the scoring for Ukraine with a well-taken strike in the 27th minute to put them 1-0 up. Sweden found their equaliser just before halftime through Emil Forsberg. Both sides were unable to score in the second half, and the game went on to extra time. Sweden defender Marcus Danielsson was given a straight red card for a poor tackle in the 99th minute. Substitute striker Artem Dobvyk headed home a fine Zinchenko cross in added time of the second half of extra time to send Ukraine fans into delirium and plunge a dagger through Swedish hearts.
