Federer crashes out of Wimbledon at quarterfinal stage after stunning upset by Hurkacz

Djokovic qualifies for semifinals, looks set to win 20th Grand Slam

Roger Federer was defeated in straight sets by 14th seed Hubert Hurkacz 3-6 6-7 0-6 to end the 39-year-old’s participation in this year’s Wimbledon competition. Polish Hurkacz has now made a name for himself as something of a giant killer at Wimbledon as he had previously sent World number two Daniil Medvedev crashing from the competition.

Sixth-seed Federer came into the tournament after pulling out of the French Open earlier in the year to keep him in top shape for the competition. He made light work of Adrian Mannarino, Richard Gasquet, Cameron Norrie and Lorenzo Sonego in the previous rounds before suffering a defeat at the hands of Hurkacz in the quarterfinals. Federer has won a record eight Wimbledon titles, with his last coming in 2017. Now just over a month away from his 40th birthday and with several recurring injuries, there is a good chance that the great Roger Federer might have played his last game at the Center Court. Hurkacz will try to go further when he faces seventh seed Matteo Berrettini in the last four after Berrettini defeated Felix Auger Aliassime in their quarterfinal meeting.

World number one Novak Djokovic defeated Hungary’s Marton Fucsovics 6-3 6-4 6-4 in straight sets to progress to the semifinals at Wimbledon. The Serb showed his customary control throughout the game as he cruised to victory and moved a step closer to a historic 20th Grand Slam title. With the absence of both Roger Federer and Rafael Nadal from the semifinals, Djokovic could become only the third man after the duo to win 20 career Grand Slam titles. He would face 10th seed Dennis Shapovalov in the semis after the Canadian battled past Karen Khachanov in the quarterfinals.
