Djokovic eases past Shapovalov, joins Berrettini in Wimbledon final

World number one Novak Djokovic booked his place in the final of the 2021 Wimbledon Championship with a straight sets win over Canadian 10th seed Dennis Shapovalov. He would be joined by Italian 7th seed Matteo Berrettini, who defeated Hubert Hurkacz in the other semifinal.

The Serbian Djokovic is aiming for a record-equalling 20th Grand Slam title at the All England Club and is now one step away from achieving the feat after defeating Shapovalov 7-6 7-5 7-5 in straight sets to book a final spot against Berrettini after the Italian came through four sets against Polish giant-killer Hurkacz 6-3 6-0 6-7 6-4. Berrettini became the first Italian ever to qualify for the final of the Wimbledon Championship.

In the women’s tournament, Australian World number one Ashleigh Barty overcame Germany’s Angelique Kerber in straight sets 6-3 7-6 in their semifinal encounter to qualify for the final as she aims for her first-ever Wimbledon crown. She will face eighth-seed Karolina Pliskova in the final after Pliskova came from a set down to defeat Aryna Sabalenka 5-7 6-4 6-4 in their semifinal match on Center Court.
