AFCON 2021: Champions Algeria on the brink of elimination as Sierra Leone draw 2-2 with Ivory Coast

Algeria the AFCON reigning champions are on the brink of elimination from the group stages after their 1-0 defeat in the hands of Equatorial Guinea.

Here is the game by game recap of all that happened today at the ongoing Africa Cup of Nations as teams in groups E, and F played on Sunday.

The two games played in Group E were filled with drama as the highly ranked teams were shocked. In the first game, Sierra Leone came back twice to snatch a point against Ivory Coast.

Champions League hottest striker Sebastian Haller scored Ivory Coast first shortly after Franck Kessie had missed a penalty.

Musa Noah Kamara equalised for the Leone Stars. Arsenal’s Nickolas Pepe gave Ivory Coast the lead again but Alhaji Kamara equalised in the dead to hand Sierra Leone a 2-2 draw against the Elephants.

In the same group, Obiang Obono Esteban scored the only goal as Equatorial Guinea secured a famous 1-0 win against Riyad Mahrez led Algeria.

The defeat ended Algeria’s 35-game unbeaten streak.

The defeat means Algeria now have just one point from 2 games and seat bottom of the log. They play Ivory Coast who have 4 points in their last game.

While Sierra Leone who have 2 points will fight it out against Equatorial Guinea who has 3 points.

It will go down to the wire in this group.

In group F, Tunisia hammered Mauritania 4-0 to chalk their first win of the campaign. Wahbi Khazri scored twice, Seifeddine Jaziri, and Hamza Mathlouthi scored the goals.

Mali and Gambia played a 1-1 draw in their tie. The both scored the goals via penalties. Ibrahima Kone scored Mali’s goal and Musa Barrow scored Gambia’s.

As it stand Gambia, Mali both have 4 points, Tunisia 3 and Mauritania 0.

Remember, Nigeria will play the 3rd placed team from Group B, E or F in the Round of 16.
