Eguma is upbeat ahead of Wydad CAFCL clash after Watanga success

Coach Stanley Eguma is positive ahead of Rivers United’s clash against the reigning African champions, Wydad Athletic Club of Casablanca, Morocco in the CAF Champions League next qualifying round.

The Nigeria Professional League champions booked a place in the next phase of the qualifiers after securing a 3-1 aggregate win against Watanga FC of Liberia.

Rivers United who secured a comfortable 3-0 first-leg win in Portharcourt were beaten 1-0 in the second leg in Liberia on Sunday.

Fasedu Logan scored the game’s only goal from the penalty spot in the 16th minute after the referee adjudged that Trokon Joshua had been fouled in the box.

“We never expected a game like this after we beat them 3-0 in the first leg, anyway I commend their efforts,” said Eguma after the game in Liberia.

“Fortunately for us, we are better than them, they got their chance and took it and we tried not to let them score us again.”

The veteran coach then talked a bit about the playoff games against the reigning champions, Wydad Athletic Club of Casablanca, Morocco.

“We have to work very hard and improve our performance playing against Wydad is going to be a big match but we are equal to the task”, he said.

Rivers United will host Wydad Athletic Club of Casablanca, Morocco in Nigeria on October 7th while the 2nd leg will be in Morocco.
