Akwa United FC survive armed robbery attempt along Ogoni road
Nigeria Professional Football League campaigners Akwa United FC on Thursday escaped from armed robbery attack along Ogoni road.
The Promise Keepers were returning to Uyo from Ibadan venue for the midweek NPFL clash vs Kwara United FC.
According to a report on the clubs website, the Uyo-bound Akwa United FC contingent unluckily drove into an illegal road block set-up by armed robbers along Ogoni road around 6:48pm on Thursday.
On discovering the danger, Akwa United FC drivers bravely reversed the clubs vehicles conveying players and officials to flee from the robbers.
The fleeing Akwa United FC contingent were pelted with dangerous weapons as the evil-thinking men made attempts to stop the drivers from escaping.
Aside a collision involving one of the buses with another vehicle and damages to some parts of the teams busses, the Promise Keepers escaped with no harm to life or loss of property.
In a statement after the robbery attempt, Akwa United FC Team Manager Sir Emmanuel Udoh described the incident as unfortunate and expressed appreciation to God for His journey mercies and protection over the team.
“The attack on our team along Ogoni road was one terrible experience and the psychological effects is what we need to put behind us fast.
“It was God that saved us from those hoodlums, who were determined to do anything to us. The worst part of it is that the attack happened in-between two police checkpoints.
“On behalf of Akwa United, I want to use this opportunity to appeal to all security agencies to redouble their effort especially along some well-known dangerous locations like Ogoni road, ” the former Akwa Ibom State Football Association secretary concluded.
