2023 French Open: Swiatek defeats Muchova, wins third title in four years

World number one Iga Swiatek defeated Karolina Muchova in three sets to win the 2023 French Open, claiming her second consecutive title and her third in four years.

22-year-old star Swiatek defeated Beatriz Haddad Maia to reach the final while Muchova overcame World number two Aryna Sabalenka in the other semifinal.

Muchova was looking to complete another upset against Swiatek, who had not dropped a set en route to the final despite not playing her best tennis this year.

The Pole claimed the first set in less than an hour, winning 6-2 as Muchova looked rattled by her quality. The Czech star fought back in the second set, claiming it 7-5 and becoming the first player to win a set against Swiatek in this year’s French Open. She also became the first player to win a set against Swiatek in a Grand Slam final.

Swiatek rounded off the match in the third set, claiming a 6-4 win to emerge as the champion of the 2023 French Open by a 6-2 5-7 6-4 scoreline.

Iga Swiatek is the first woman to win consecutive French Open crowns since 2007 and has now won her fourth Grand Slam title.
