Team Nigeria stripped of Commonwealth gold over doping scandal
Nigeria’s women’s 4x100m relay team have been stripped of the gold medal they won at the 2022 Commonwealth Games in Birmingham over a positive doping test from one of the team members.
The quartet of Tobi Amusan, Favour Ofili, Grace Nwokocha and Rosemary Chukwuma had won the women’s 4x100m relay race in Birmingham, setting a new African record of 42.10s at the event and claiming the gold medal ahead of England and Jamaica.
Months after the race, it was discovered that Nwokocha had tested positive for banned substances, and the result and performance of the team came under scrutiny from the Athletic Integrity Unit. The sprinter was found guilty of using banned anabolic steroids ostarine and ligandrol, leading to retrospective action against herself and her team.
The team have now received confirmation that their gold medals will be stripped, and Team England will be upgraded to having won the event, with Jamaica taking silver and Australia bronze.
Nwokocha has also seen her results in the 100m and 200m events expunged, and will serve a ban for ingesting a banned substance once a definitive judgement is pronounced.
