Osimhen targets Rashidi Yekini’s record with a cool head
Red-hot Super Eagles of Nigeria striker Victor Osimhen has said he is chasing the goal-scoring record held by Late Rashidi Yekini with a cool head.
The Napoli forward scored a hattrick as Nigeria spanked Sao Tome and Principe 6-0 to end their successful AFCON qualification journey on Sunday September 10.
That took his tally with the Nigeria national team to 20, seventeen goals short of Late Rashidi Yekini’s 37-goal all-time record.
At 24, fourth placed Victor Osimhen has huge potential and a chance to clip the record but will do so with a cool head as he has huge respect for the Late Nigerian goal-king.
Osimhen told Pulse ” I don’t think I can challenge the great, the legend Rashidi Yekini because he’s done so well for the country, for the Super Eagles, and to be able to try to follow in his footsteps is a huge one for me,”
“But I think I have the ability to try to meet up with his numbers and to try to help the team as much as I can. I think I’m ready to go. I’m ready.
“I’ve got a lot of players that can also help and support me. So, for me, I’m ready to give my all for the team.
“If I surpass the goals record, I pass it; if I equal it, I equal it, but I really don’t think about that. I just want to get as many goals as I can score for the team, which is the most important thing.” the reigning Italian Serie A top-scorer said.
His 10-goals for Nigeria in the Africa Cup of Nations qualifying round was the highest in the series and drew accolades from the Confederation of African Football – CAF .
Victor Osimhen will have opportunity to score more when Nigeria begins journey to the 2026 FIFA World Cup in November.
