Eugene Diamond League: Tobi Amusan makes history as Ese Brume narrowly misses out

Women’s 100m hurdles world record holder Tobi Amusan made history at the Eugene Diamond League as she returned to winning ways. She was joined by fellow high-flying athlete Ese Brume in the US for the Diamond League finals.

After a protracted case off the track, Tobi Amusan was clearly not at her best at the World Championships in Budapest as she lost her title. A month later, however, she has bounced back by achieving a feat only ever achieved by one woman in the 100m hurdles.

Amusan won the women’s 100m hurdles final at the Eugene Diamond League in a season’s best time of 12.33s, ahead of rivals Jasmine Camacho-Quinn (12.38s) and Kendra Harrison (12.44s). The erstwhile world champion became the second woman in the women’s 100m hurdles to win the Diamond League trophy for three successive years, emulating Dawn Harper-Nelson, who won it in 2012, 2013 and 2014. Amusan added this year’s title to the ones she won in 2021 and 2022, further writing her name in the history books.

Like Amusan, Ese Brume was participating in the Eugene Diamond League finals in the women’s long jump. Recently ranked as the fifth best long jumper in the world, Brume was out for her first Diamond League trophy.

Brume leapt to a distance of 6.85m, her best mark this year but finished second via count back, behind Serbia’s Ivana Vuleta, who also finished with 6.85m. An injury prevented Brume from attempting her final jump, causing her to finish in second place. Quanesha Burks was third with a leap of 6.77m.
