Awoniyi thanks Cooper for ‘making his dream come true’

Super Eagles forward Taiwo Awoniyi, who was brought to Nottingham Forest by Cooper from Union Berlin during the 2022 summer transfer window, shared a heartfelt message expressing his gratitude to the departing manager for helping ‘make his dream come true’.

Prior to his Forest move, the Nigerian International was on the books of Liverpool but never got opportunity to fulfill his dream of playing in the English Premier League.

Following Steve Copper’s sack as Nottingham Forest coach on Tuesday, December 19, 2023, Awoniyi took to Instagram to convey his appreciation, stating, “Thank you for helping me make my big dream come true and bringing out the best in me. All the very best, Gaffer.”

During Cooper’s tenure, Awoniyi showed promise, registering 15 goals and providing three assists in 41 appearances.

However, the forward faced setbacks due to injuries, limiting his full potential at the club. Despite the challenges, Awoniyi acknowledged Cooper’s role in his development and success.

Steve Cooper played a pivotal role in Nottingham Forest’s promotion to the English Premier League via the Championship play-offs in May 2022.

Cooper collaborated with club owner Angelos Marinakis in recruiting 44 players, including Awoniyi, across three transfer windows.

Nottingham Forest has not yet announced Cooper’s successor, but former Wolves manager Nuno Espirito Santo is reportedly in formal discussions for the managerial position.

The club aims to turn its fortunes around with a new leadership approach and rejuvenate its performance in the league.

The departure of Cooper marks a significant change in the club’s coaching staff as they seek a fresh direction for the remainder of the season.
