Victor Osimhen in pole position to finish 2023 as top-Scoring Nigerian player, Orban, Ighalo in close chase
Napoli’s prolific striker, Victor Osimhen, is on course to end the year as the highest-scoring Nigerian player of 2023. With his recent goal against Cagliari last weekend, Osimhen’s tally reached an impressive 29 goals in all competitions since the beginning of the year, making him the leading Nigerian goal-scorer globally.
Osimhen’s goal-scoring prowess has surpassed that of his mentor, former Manchester United star Odion Ighalo, who has managed 27 goals in all competitions combined for Al-Hilal and his current club Al-Wehda.
The Napoli attacker holds a two-goal advantage over Ighalo, making their race for the top-scoring Nigerian player of 2023 a closely contested battle.
Both Napoli and Al-Wehda have two more games scheduled before the year concludes, ensuring that the competition for the title will be intense until the very end.
In 2022, Ighalo emerged as the highest-scoring Nigerian player, netting 27 goals, surpassing Paul Onuachu’s total of 21 goals.
Known for his goal-poaching abilities, Onuachu was the leading Nigerian goal-scorer in 2021, amassing an impressive 30 goals from 45 appearances in all competitions while playing for KAA Gent.
Gift Orban, a striker from KAA Gent, remains a contender in the race to become Nigeria’s top goal-scorer of 2023. Orban has netted 26 goals during the year and hopes to outscore Osimhen and Ighalo in the remaining two games of the year.
The top five Nigerian players with the most goals in 2023 also include Akor Adams from Montpellier, who has scored 25 goals, and Bayer Leverkusen’s Victor Boniface, who boasts 24 goals.
As the year concludes, football enthusiasts eagerly anticipate the outcome of this thrilling goal-scoring race among Nigeria’s top attacking talents.
