Injury headache for Peseiro as Super Eagles AFCON camp opens
As the Super Eagles of Nigeria camp opens ahead of the AFCON, head coach Jose Peseiro will have headache over injury reports about his Leicester City players.
Leicester City manager, Enzo Maresca has revealed Wilfred Ndidi has joined forward Kelechi Iheanacho in the injury list with less than 12-days to the Nations Cup kickoff in Ivory Coast.
Ndidi missed Leicester City’s 4-1 defeat of Huddersfield Town at King Power Stadium on Monday, January 1, 2024 with Iheanacho also not available for the game as a result of a muscular problem.
In his post-match comments, Maresca offered worrying updates that will press down the plans of Super Eagles coach, Jose Peseiro.
“Kele and Wilf are both injured, but they are now going to be with the international team,”Maresca was quoted by Leicester Mercury.
“We’ll see if they’re going to keep them or send them back. But they are both injured unfortunately for us.”
The Super Eagles will begin preparations for AFCON 2023 in Abu Dhabi United Arab Emirates on Tuesday.
Both players will report to camp with the Nigeria national team and will be assessed by the doctors before final decisions are taken per their participation.
The potential loss of Ndidi and Iheanacho would represent a massive bblow for the Eagles, with both players expected to play key roles in Nigeria’s bid to win a fourth AFCON title.
