Paul Onuachu set to be named in Super Eagles AFCON squad
In-form striker set to replace injured Sadiq Umar
Trabzonspor striker Paul Onuachu is set to be named in Super Eagles squad for the AFCON as a late replacement for the injured Sadiq Umar, Own goal reports.
Real Sociedad striker Sadiq Umar picked up a knee injury in training, which will keep him out for at least three weeks, ruling him out of the tournament.
Jose Peseiro has decided to extend an invitation to Onuachu, who joined Trabzonspor from Southampton on loan in the summer. The 29-year-old striker scored for his side as they claimed a 2-1 win over Samunspor to remain in third place in the Turkish Super Lig standings.
Onuachu has now scored nine goals and provided three assists in only 15 appearances for Tranzonspor this season, a welcome return to form after his barren spell in England.
The coach and his staff will hope Onuachu arrives in time to play in Sunday’s opener against Equatorial Guinea, as Victor Osimhen is the only available striker for the match.
Sadiq Umar has now joined Victor Boniface and Wilfred Ndidi in pulling out of the tournament, while the team is still sweating over the fitness of Kelechi Iheanacho.
Onuachu is set to feature in only his second major tournament with the Super Eagles, having also featured in the 2019 AFCON, where Nigeria won the bronze medal.
