Gift Orban set to complete Olympique Lyonnais switch

Nigerian youngster nearing transfer to French side

Nigerian striker Gift Orban is set to complete a permanent switch to Olympique Lyonnais from KAA Gent for a reported fee of around €13 million this month, as per L’Equipe.

Orban made headlines for his impressive goalscoring form for the Belgian club after signing with them from Stabaek in January 2023. His performances caught the eyes of multiple top clubs, including Premier League outfit Tottenham Hotspur, but a deal was never reached for his transfer. Asda

This season, the 21-year-old has slowed down with his goalscoring, and has 12 goals in 30 appearances for Gent. This is in contrast with the second half of last season, when he scored 20 goals in 22 appearances for the club, including a record European hat-trick in the UEFA Europa Conference League.

Gift Orban scored five hat-tricks in 2023, more than any other player in Europe, including Erling Haaland and Kylian Mbappé. The youngster will sign a deal with Lyon until 2028.

Orban joins a Lyon side that has struggled for most of the season and are in 16th place in Ligue 1. The striker will look to play alongside former Arsenal star Alexandre Lacazette and help the side avoid relegation to Ligue 2.
