Brazilian Footballer Robinho mandated to serve nine-year prison sentence for rape
Former Manchester City and AC Milan player Robinho is facing imprisonment following a ruling by Brazil’s Supreme Court (STJ) in connection with a 2013 gang rape case.
The court’s decision mandates Robinho to serve a nine-year sentence for his involvement in the assault, which occurred at a nightclub in Milan.
Robinho, along with four other men, was convicted in 2017 for raping a young woman at the nightclub.
Despite attempts to avoid extradition to Italy, where the sentence was issued, Robinho’s legal battle has culminated in the Brazilian judiciary’s ruling, requiring him to serve his sentence in his homeland.
The STJ delivered its verdict this Wednesday, with a majority decision in favor of imprisonment, although two members dissented.
Robinho, who spent four seasons at Milan from 2010 to 2014, faced the consequences of his actions as the court upheld the sentence for the gang rape.
In a recent interview on Record TV, Robinho suggested that his conviction was unjust and attributed it to racism in Italy.
However, despite his claims, the court’s decision stands, and Robinho’s defense has indicated plans to appeal to the Federal Supreme Court (STF).
While Robinho’s fate now lies in the hands of Brazilian authorities, who are tasked with executing the mandated arrest, the former footballer’s legal proceedings are far from over.
As he prepares to appeal to the STF, Robinho remains subject to the legal process, with the potential for further developments in his case.
The ruling against Robinho adds to the recent legal controversies involving Brazilian footballers, underscoring the complexities and consequences of high-profile cases within the sport.
