Nigerian Badminton star Anuoluwapo Opeyori books historic Olympic games spot

Anuoluwapo Opeyori has etched his name in the annals of Nigerian badminton history by securing a spot at the Paris 2024 Olympic Games, making him the first Nigerian badminton player to achieve this feat back-to-back.

The Badminton World Federation (BWF) confirmed Opeyori’s qualification for the Olympics, marking a significant milestone for the talented athlete. With this achievement, Opeyori adds another remarkable accolade to his illustrious career, having previously dominated the African Men’s Singles Badminton scene.

A two-time African Games Champion and winner of four African Championship titles, Opeyori’s journey to the Olympics reflects his relentless dedication and outstanding performance on the badminton court. His qualification underscores the growing prominence of Nigerian badminton on the global stage.

Francis Orbih, President of the Badminton Federation of Nigeria (BFN), expressed his elation at Opeyori’s historic qualification, emphasizing the significance of this milestone for Nigerian badminton. Orbih praised Opeyori for breaking barriers and setting new standards for Nigerian athletes in the sport.

Orbih highlighted the BFN’s commitment to supporting young players like Opeyori in their pursuit of excellence, affirming the federation’s dedication to nurturing world-class talent.

Orbih said, “History has been made in badminton as Anuoluwapo Opeyori has secured a spot at the Paris 2024 Olympic Games with the release made by the Badminton World Federation (BWF).

“I am excited and full of joy because Anuoluwapo Opeyori is the first Nigerian badminton player to feature in the men’s singles at the Olympic Games and also the first Nigerian to attend two Olympics and back to back.

“Three years ago, it was Dorcas Adesokan in the women’s singles and Opeyori with his partner Godwin Olofua in the men’s doubles that made it to the Olympic Games in Tokyo. Today, Anuoluwapo Opeyori will represent Nigeria in the men’s singles; the leadership of BFN and Nigeria are proud of him”.

He added “I want to urge Anuoluwapo Opeyori to continue training hard for the Games; we are going to ensure he attends training tours before the Olympic Games”.

With the unwavering support of the BFN and the nation behind him, Opeyori is poised to make his mark on the global badminton arena at the Paris 2024 Olympics.
