‘A blessing’ – Flying Eagles coach reacts to U20 AFCON draw
Coach Aliyu Zubairu has said the Flying Eagles’ group in the U20 AFCON is a tough challenge for his team, SportsRation reports.
The Flying Eagles have been placed in a difficult Group B for the U20 AFCON in April, alongside Egypt, Morocco, and South Africa. They will start their campaign in Cote d’Ivoire against Egypt, who have won the tournament five times.
“It’s a good draw,” said coach Zubairu. “If a team wants to reach the FIFA World Cup, they shouldn’t be afraid of any opponent. Facing Egypt, Morocco, and South Africa is a big chance. I see it as a blessing.”
He continued: “We need to stop calling this the ‘Group of Death.’ In African football, there are no small teams anymore. The key is to prepare well. Any team, even if they are less known, can surprise everyone if they are well-prepared.”
The top two teams from each of the three first-round groups, along with the two best third-place finishers, will qualify for the quarterfinals of the U20 AFCON.
The semifinalists of the tournament will also earn a place in the 2025 FIFA U20 World Cup in Chile.
