Abia Warriors defeat Enyimba to clinch Abia State FA Cup title

In a thrilling final showdown at the Umuahia Township Stadium, Abia Warriors emerged victorious in the Abia State Football Association Cup, defeating Enyimba International Football Club of Aba 4-2 on penalties after a tense 1-1 draw in regular time.

The match lived up to its billing, showcasing a blend of physicality, explosiveness, and sheer entertainment. Both teams left nothing to chance, treating the encounter with the intensity befitting of a cup final.

Coach Bethel Oji’s strategic adjustments proved pivotal for Abia Warriors, with Ifeanyi Anaemena and Collins Nwoburuoke making notable contributions in defense. Despite the high stakes, the game began at a frenetic pace, with each side vying for control.

Abia Warriors drew first blood in the 35th minute when Meme Okike capitalized on Enyimba’s defensive lapse to slot home Adejoh Ojonugwa’s freekick, giving his team the lead going into halftime.

The second half witnessed a dramatic turn of events as Enyimba rallied back, with Chijioke Mbaoma and Eze Ekwutoziam injecting fresh energy into their attack. Joseph Atule’s sensational long-range strike in the 74th minute brought Enyimba level, setting the stage for a nail-biting finish.

As the tension mounted, injuries to key players on both sides added to the drama. However, neither team could find the decisive goal, leading to a penalty shootout to determine the winner.

In the shootout, Abia Warriors held their nerve, converting four of their penalties, while Enyimba could only manage to score two. A crucial save from goalkeeper Sharp Uzoigwe and a composed finish from Ayodele Ezekiel sealed the victory for Abia Warriors, crowning them champions of the Abia State FA Cup.
