AFCON 2019: Nigeria Pip Guinea, Through To Round Of 16
The Super Eagles of Nigeria on Wednesday became the first team to qualify for the Round of 16 of the 2019 Africa Cup of Nations after a 1-0 defeat of the Syli Nationale of Guinea in Alexandria, Egypt.
Head Coach, Genort Rohr made five changes to the team which had earlier won its opener 1-0 against Burundi on Saturday with Troost Ekong, Abdullahi, Obi, Chukwueze and Onuachu making way for Balogun, Awaziem, Musa, Simon and Ighalo.
In a cagey affair in Alexandria, Nigeria started off the better of the two teams with early chance for Odion Ighalo who couldn’t control the ball in the area and put his effort off target.
Ighalo was thereafter put through on goal and with Musa waiting in box, the forward could only put his effort side netting and both teams went into the break level on score
Nigeria dominated proceedings in the second half, just as the first and were they after rewarded with the decisive goal when a corner swung in by Moses Simon was met by a towering header from Kenneth Omeruo as the Eagles book their place in the round of 16.
