AFCON 2023: OAU students set new viewing record in Nigeria’s final loss to Ivory Coast

A historic feat was recorded at Obafemi Awolowo University (OAU) during the AFCON 2023 final between Nigeria and Ivory Coast as a record-breaking number of students gathered to watch the match.

More than 8000 students congregated at the Oduduwa Hall, marking the largest gathering to witness a football match on-screen in Nigeria’s history.

The atmosphere was electric as the students came out in full force to support the Super Eagles in their quest for victory.

Despite the overwhelming show of support, Nigeria succumbed to a 2-1 defeat against a resilient Ivorian team. Goals from Frank Kessie and Sebastian Haller sealed the victory for Ivory Coast, overturning William Troost-Ekong’s early lead for the Super Eagles.

The triumph for Ivory Coast marked their third AFCON title, adding another chapter to their storied football history.

However, for Nigerians, the loss in another prestigious final brought disappointment and heartache.

The AFCON 2023 tournament itself witnessed unprecedented global viewership, with over 2 billion people tuning in across the world throughout the matchdays. This remarkable feat solidified AFCON 2023 as the premier sporting championship of 2024 thus far, captivating audiences worldwide with its thrilling football action.
