AFCON 2025: Bongonda Strike Earns DR Congo Narrow Win Over Benin
Théo Bongonda scored in the first half as the Democratic Republic of Congo began their TotalEnergies CAF Africa Cup of Nations Morocco 2025 campaign with a 1–0 win over Benin at the Al Madina Stadium in Rabat.
DR Congo came into the tournament full of confidence after qualifying for the 2026 FIFA World Cup play-offs and showed their intent from the start. They controlled the early stages and looked sharper than their opponents.
Their strong opening was rewarded in the 16th minute when Bongonda took advantage of a mix-up in the Benin defence and calmly finished past goalkeeper Saturnin Allagbé.
After taking the lead, the Leopards continued to press. They moved the ball well and caused problems for a Benin side missing five regular starters due to suspension. Cédric Bakambu went close to scoring a second goal, but Allagbé made a good one-on-one save, while another DR Congo effort was ruled out for offside.
Benin did not give up and tried to respond through quick counter-attacks and set pieces. The Cheetahs showed good organisation, but clear chances were limited as the Congolese defence dealt comfortably with crosses and loose balls.
In the closing stages, Benin pushed forward in search of an equaliser but lacked the final touch. DR Congo stayed solid at the back and saw out the game calmly to secure all three points and a clean sheet.
