Off the Pitch

AFCON is over, But Calvin Bassey deserves a mention

The Africa Cup of Nations has come to an end, but before attention fully shifts away, it’s worth taking a moment to appreciate Calvin Bassey and the role he played for Nigeria over the last stretch of games.

Bassey has quietly been one of the most reliable players for the Nigeria national football team. In the Super Eagles’ last 12 matches, he is the only player who has stayed on the pitch from start to finish every time, without being substituted.

He started and completed eight World Cup qualifiers, featured in three AFCON qualifiers, and also played at AFCON itself. In total, Bassey played 1,120 minutes, made up of 720 minutes in World Cup qualifiers, 270 minutes in AFCON qualifiers, and 90 minutes at AFCON.

With AFCON now concluded, Bassey turns his attention back to club football, returning to his club duties after an extended run of international matches with Nigeria.
