AFCON winner Brown Ideye set to join Rivers United
Finidi George reveals deal details
2013 AFCON winner and former Super Eagles striker Brown Ideye may soon join Rivers United, as confirmed by the club’s head coach, Finidi George.
Brown Ideye was recently seen in Port Harcourt during Rivers United’s 2-0 victory over Shooting Stars in the Nigeria Premier Football League (NPFL), sparking rumours of his return to Nigerian football.
Finidi George expressed his excitement about the possible signing, saying, “There is every likelihood that he will join us. He wants to give back, and that’s the most important thing. If he brings the same hunger we see in Ahmed Musa, we will welcome him.”
Ideye, who last played for Turkish side Göztepe in 2022, is known for his experience and goal-scoring ability, having had successful stints with clubs like West Bromwich Albion, Olympiacos, and Malaga. The 36-year-old was also part of the Super Eagles squad that won the Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) in 2013.
Rivers United, currently on an unbeaten run in the NPFL, are looking to strengthen their squad as Finidi George aims for success in his first season with the team. The club has already added Ndifreke Effiong, a proven forward, to their ranks.
Finidi, who previously led Enyimba to their ninth NPFL title, is determined to make an impact at Rivers United. The potential signing of Ideye would provide not only a boost in attack but also valuable leadership on and off the field.
With fans eager to see the AFCON winner in action, Ideye’s arrival would be a significant step forward for both the player and Rivers United as they aim to challenge for the NPFL title this season.
