Super Eagles captain Ahmed Musa has joined the growing list of Nigerian football stars mourning the death of iconic goalkeeper Peter Rufai, who passed away on Thursday morning in Lagos at the age of 61.
In a heartfelt message shared on his social media page Thursday evening, Musa expressed disbelief over the news and paid glowing tribute to the former national team hero, popularly known as “Dodo Mayana.”
“Can’t believe I’m typing this – a post to bid farewell to a true giant of Nigerian football, Peter Rufai,” Musa wrote. “Your heroic reflexes and unwavering presence between the posts brought us moments of pride on the world stage. ⚽
May your spirit continue to inspire future generations of Super Eagles. Though you’ve left us, your legacy soars higher than any trophy. Fly high, DODOMAYANA — the nation mourns a hero.
Condolences to your family, friends, teammates, and fans. Rest in peace, legend. ️”
Rufai, who served as Nigeria’s first-choice goalkeeper at the 1994 and 1998 FIFA World Cups, died at around 6am on July 3 after a short illness. His passing was confirmed by the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) and former teammate Waidi Akanni.
Regarded as one of the finest goalkeepers in African football history, Rufai’s international career began in 1981. He was pivotal in Nigeria’s AFCON successes, including winning the 1994 title in Tunisia and making history with the Super Eagles at their World Cup debut the same year.
Beyond the national team, he played for clubs in Belgium, the Netherlands, Portugal, and Spain, and was a beloved figure at Stationery Stores FC in Lagos.
Following his retirement, Rufai remained deeply involved in Nigerian football, mentoring young players and briefly serving as coordinator for the country’s U-23 team.
His death has left a significant void in Nigerian football, with tributes continuing to pour in from around the world. He is remembered not just for his skill and bravery on the pitch, but also for his charisma, humility, and service.
