Ajayi features as Al Ahly extend dominance with 3-0 hammering of Kaizer Chiefs

Red Devils secure record 10th CAF Champions League title

Al Ahly SC thrashed Kaizer Chiefs FC 3-0 in the final of the 2021 CAF Champions League at the Stade Mohammed V in Morocco to pick up a record-extending 10th CAF Champions League title for the Egyptian side.

Both sides attempted to wrest control in a closely fought first half without finding the net. The game was turned on its head when Chiefs midfielder Happy Mashiane picked up a yellow card for a foul, which was subsequently upgraded to a red card in the last minute of the first half. With the Chiefs down to 10 men, the Red Devils had a field day in the second half of the game as striker Mohamed Sherif opened the scoring after just 53 minutes. Mohamed Majdi Afsha added a second for them in the 64th minute as they looked to run away with the title before Amr Alsoulia scored in the 74th minute to put the game to bed and cap off a dominant display by the perennial winners. Super Eagles goalkeeper Daniel Akpeyi was in goal for the Chiefs throughout the game, and ex-Shooting Stars and Dream team striker Junior Ajayi was a 90th-minute substitute for Al Ahly.

The title was Al Ahly’s 10th, a record in the CAF Champions League. It also marked their third time of winning the title back-to-back after they won it in 2020, as well. Al Ahly’s South African coach Pitso Mosimane has become the most successful African coach in the history of the competition after securing his third title following previous wins with Mamelodi Sundowns and Al Ahly. The Red Devils will represent the African continent at the 2021 Club World Cup in Japan.
