Akwa Ibom Governor Sends Message to Super Eagles Ahead of AFCON 2025 Opener Against Tanzania

The Governor of Akwa Ibom State, Pastor Umo Eno, has joined millions of Nigerians in urging the Super Eagles to go for glory as they open their 2025 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) campaign against Tanzania today.
“With Uyo as the home of the Super Eagles where they qualified for the Nations cup, I on behalf of the over 7.9 million people of Akwa Ibom wish them a successful start to the Nations cup campaign,” the sports-loving governor said.
Nigeria, three-time champions of the competition, will face Tanzania in their Group C opener at the Fez Stadium in Morocco, with kick-off scheduled for 6:30 p.m. Nigerian time.
According to a report by Mfon Patrick, Governor Eno, who spoke through the Honourable Commissioner for Sports, Elder Paul Bassey, expressed strong confidence in the Super Eagles’ ability to bring joy, pride and glory to the nation, pointing to the team’s rich history at the Africa Cup of Nations.
“As the Super Eagles prepare to engage Tanzania at the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations tournament in Morocco, we, the sports-loving people of Akwa Ibom State, wish our national team the very best in today’s match and in all subsequent games,” the governor said.
“Our national team is a force to be reckoned with on the continent. We have done well in the past, and we are solidly behind the team. As a state, we will do our best to cheer them to victory from home.”
Governor Eno described participation at the Africa Cup of Nations as a moment of national pride for both the players and Nigerians at home and abroad. He expressed confidence in the quality and character of the squad to deliver inspiring performances.
“We trust in the quality of players in the team to put up performances that will bring glory, honour, and pride to millions of Nigerians around the world. Football is one sport that has the power to unite the people, and at this moment, our nation needs that unity more than ever. That is why it is important for all Nigerians to rally round the team and give them maximum support.”
The governor also encouraged the Super Eagles to move past the disappointment of missing out on qualification for the 2026 FIFA World Cup and use AFCON 2025 as a platform to reassert Nigeria’s dominance in African football.
The Super Eagles, champions of Africa in 1980, 1994 and 2013, are drawn in Group C alongside Tanzania, Tunisia and Uganda.
