Akwa United Chairman boosts 16-Team grassroots tournament in Uyo with generous support
In a show of support, the Chairman of Akwa United FC, Elder Paul Bassey, has made a cash donation to support a 16-team grassroots tournament ongoing in Uyo, SportsRation reports.
On Friday, July 12, 2024, the Akwa United boss was present at the Uyo Township Stadium, the venue for the Immortality/Executive Sports Management Championship.
Elder Paul Bassey shared a message of commendation to Prophet Ubong James, the CEO of Immortality FC, for organizing the championship, which features sixteen top football academies in Akwa Ibom State.
He went on to make a cash donation of one hundred thousand naira in support of the championship.
The competition, which has been ongoing for two weeks, has received support from other football stakeholders, such as Agent Paul Ojo, who made a cash donation of one hundred thousand naira, and Blessed Stars Academy sponsor Moses Ukpong, who contributed fifty thousand naira in support of the championship.
The 2024 Immortality/Executive Sports Management Championship features sixteen teams split into two groups. The top two teams in each group will qualify for the semi-final scheduled to take place next week.
After six rounds of matches in each group, Blessed Stars Football Academy occupies the top spot in Group A, following six wins from their six games. The Coach Ubong Vincent-tutored Blessed Stars have booked their place in the semi-final. New Flame Academy is second on the log, with Immortality FC in close chase for the group’s other semi-final spot.
In Group B, Maccito Solution leads the way with sixteen points, while defending champions Eagle Eyes Academy sit in second place ahead of the final round of group stage matches.
Fans at the Uyo Township Stadium shared their excitement with SportsRation correspondent Nsikakabasi Akpan. They hailed the quality of performances by the teams, with special commendation for Blessed Stars Academy, which always dominates opponents, Eagle Eyes for their teamwork, and Maccito Academy for their blend of experience and youth.
John Okon, a local football enthusiast, said, “Blessed Stars Academy has been phenomenal this season. Their players are skilled, and they dominate every match they play.”
Dominc Essien, another fan, added, “Eagle Eyes Academy showcases excellent teamwork. You can see the understanding and chemistry among their players.”
Basil Udo, who has followed the tournament closely, noted, “Maccito Academy’s blend of experience and youth is impressive. They have a balanced team that plays with great coordination.”
Jeremiah Ekanem, a long-time supporter of grassroots football, remarked, “The level of talent in this tournament is incredible. These academies are doing a fantastic job in nurturing young talents.”
Apart from his cash support, Akwa United chairman Elder Paul Bassey also urged talented players spotted at the championship to avail themselves of the Akwa United screening exercise scheduled for Monday, July 15, 2024, to test their might and possibly earn a move to play for the 2021 Nigerian champions.
