Akwa United Chairman, Elder Paul Bassey, makes the Commissioner Nominees Shortlist in Akwa Ibom
Elder Paul Bassey, the Chairman of Akwa United FC and Vice President 2 of the Africa Clubs Association, has been nominated for a position as Commissioner in Akwa Ibom State. His name appeared on the list of Commissioner nominees presented to the Akwa Ibom State House of Assembly on Tuesday, February 11, 2025.
As a highly respected figure in sports, Bassey is expected to take charge of the Ministry of Sports, following the tenure of the previous Commissioner, Sir Monday Uko.
Bassey, a seasoned sports veteran, has earned recognition both locally and internationally. He was part of Nigeria’s delegation to the 2004 Athens Olympics and received the prestigious CAF Golden Jubilee Award in 2007 for his significant contributions to sports journalism, administration, and the development of football in Africa. He is also known as the publisher of Nigeria’s leading sports newspaper, Todaysports.
Under Bassey’s leadership, Akwa United FC achieved great success, winning the NPFL Cup in 2021. securing continental qualifications, winning the Nigeria Federation Cup title, among other achievements. His passion for sports and dedication to developing football in Nigeria has made him a well-known figure in the country.
Bassey, who is also a devoted Elder in the Apostolic Church, is seen as a perfect fit for the sports ministry, with many describing him as “a square peg in a square hole” when it comes to sports administration.
