Akwa United coach, Abdul Maikaba threatens to quit Football for Teaching if this continues

The head coach of Akwa United Football Club of Uyo, Abdul Maikaba, has threatened to leave coaching for teaching.

Abdul Maikaba who was left furious at the officials who officiated his sides 1-0 defeat at the Confluence Stadium against Niger Tornadoes on Sunday said he could return to his first love if the refereeing situation doesn’t change in the country.

The angry coach who refused to honour the post-match interview described the officiating as frustrating and appalling.

“I refused to appear for the post-match interviews because I am afraid, I could say something that will drag me into trouble so I decided to keep shut. I don’t know why these things continue to happen in our League despite concerted efforts by the League Management Company(LMC) to make the league better.

“This is one reason why our teams have all been eliminated from the CAF Champions League because the better teams don’t always win games here.

“After the defeat today, I have sat down to have a second thought on my coaching career and if things don’t change, I might quit coaching for teaching. I was a school teacher and I was doing very well in that profession before I left. Football is a passion and that was why I left the classroom for the football pitch.

“Unfortunately, my frustration is growing with every passing game and if things don’t improve, I will quit. Daily you hear that coaches are being sacked around the country, sometimes it is not because these coaches are not good, rather it has to do with other factors like officiating which is daily killing the game in Nigeria.

“The problem is that these referees, like Nura, who disallowed a good goal and issued a red to our player just to destroy our game plan today, will get punished or suspended as the case may be but either way, it will not return the points taken from us today. The worst result we could have taken out of Lokoja based on our performance today is a draw but as you know, we lost today to bad officiating”. He concluded
