Akwa United Defeat Solution FC to Begin NNL Season on a High

Akwa United started their 2025/2026 Nigeria National League campaign with an impressive 2-0 win over Solution FC at the Uyo Township Stadium on Sunday, 16 November 2025, showing early signs of their ambition to return to the Premier League.

The Promise Keepers made a bright start, taking the lead just three minutes into the match. Esonwanne Gift, who had been tipped as the team’s most dangerous forward, dived to head in a corner delivered by former Nigeria U20 star Charles Etim.

Akwa United doubled their lead midway through the first half, again from a corner. Charles Etim provided another excellent cross, which Yannick Menegbe headed home with precision to make it 2-0.

Under new head coach Paul Offor, the team played with energy and confidence. Wingers Daniel Gothom and Yannick Menegbe troubled the Solution FC defence throughout the first half. They nearly combined for a third goal before the break when Daniel’s bicycle-kick pass found Yannick, whose shot was brilliantly saved by the goalkeeper.

The second half was more balanced, with both sides enjoying periods of possession. However, Akwa United continued to create chances, with Daniel Gothom, Yannick Menegbe and substitute Erikan Francis all coming close to extending the lead.

The match ended 2-0, giving Coach Offor a winning start in his first competitive game since joining the club in August to lead their push for promotion back to the NPFL.

According to Purity Okon, Offor in his post match comments expressed his joy at the victory, praising defender Charles Etim for the quality of his crosses which led to both goals. He also noted concerns about his team losing possession in midfield during the second half and promised to address the lapses as the season progresses.

Yannick Menegbe was named Player of the Match and received his cash prize and plaque from NPFL legend Mfon Udoh, who serves as brand influencer for Akwa United and Ibom Air.

Oluebube Wisdom Becomes First-Ever Akwa United Fan of the Match

Oluebube Wisdom made history as the first winner of the new Akwa United Fan of the Match award, introduced this season and powered by Ibom Air. His loud vuvuzela, passionate chants and non-stop support stood out during the 2-0 win over Solution FC.

The award was presented by Akwa United/Ibom Air brand influencer Mfon Udoh immediately after the match. The club announced that the Fan of the Match award will be handed out at every home game this season, encouraging supporters to bring energy to the stands as the team pushes for promotion.

Akwa United will face Abakiliki FC next at the Uyo Township Stadium on Matchday Two. Abakiliki FC head into the fixture under pressure after a 1-1 draw at home to Rovers FC, a result that led to the sacking of their head coach.
