Akwa United FC unveil Nigerian Youth International Charles Etim and 16 others
In a determined bid to reclaim their status as title contenders in the 2024-25 Nigeria Premier Football League (NPFL) season, former champions Akwa United have confirmed the acquisition of 17 new players. The fresh additions come from various clubs both within and outside Nigeria, signaling the club’s intent to build a formidable squad.
Among the notable signings is former Nigeria U-17 and U-20 utility player Charles Etim, who joins from Blessed Stars Football Academy, Uyo. Etim’s versatility and experience on the national stage are expected to be crucial assets for the Promise Keepers this season.
The club also strengthened its attacking options with the inclusion of striker Mare Abson from Societe ASPAC in Benin Republic, Ghanaian forward Paul Acquah from Al Anwar in Libya, striker Chijioke Alaekwe from Tayaran FC, Libya, and striker Ruben Bala from Coton Sport FC.

In goal, Akwa United secured the services of Ghanaian goalkeeper Seidu Mutawakilu from Rivers United, alongside former Heartland FC shot-stopper Darlington Ovunda.
The defense has been bolstered with the arrivals of left-back Ubong Williams from Katsina United, right-back Eric Oguocha from Plateau United, and centre-back Ebedebiri Endurance from Rivers United. Defensive midfielder Samuel Mathew from Doma United and midfielder Chiamaka Madu, also from Rivers United, further solidify the team’s defensive and midfield structure.
Other signings include midfielder Kunle Oyetosho from De-Carddendal FC, defender Ferinyaro Abdullahi from Gateway FC, Stephen Wisdom from Bendel Insurance, Agu Samuel from Giant Brillars FC, and midfielder Olakunle Akala from Nasarawa United.
Head coach Muhammed Baba Ganaru expressed confidence in his new acquisitions, emphasizing that the players possess the professionalism, skills, and quality required to lead Akwa United to glory in the upcoming season.
Akwa United will begin their NPFL campaign on Saturday, September 7, 2024, with an away fixture against Lobi Stars at the Lafia City Stadium. The Promise Keepers are hopeful that their new-look squad will deliver a successful season, building on their legacy as one of Nigeria’s top football clubs
