Akwa United Secure Big Away Win Over First Bank in Lagos

Akwa United FC gave their fans an early Christmas gift after recording an impressive 3-1 away victory over First Bank FC at the Onikan Stadium, Lagos, on Monday morning.
The Nigeria National League (NNL) Matchday Seven encounter came just three days to Christmas 2025 and boosted Akwa United’s push for promotion.
The first half was keenly contested, with both teams creating chances, but it ended goalless as neither side could find a breakthrough.
Akwa United came out stronger after the break and took the lead in the 50th minute through in-form winger Daniel Gothom. Gothom broke free from his marker, dribbled past defenders and fired a fine shot into the net to make it 1-0.
Coach Paul Offor’s substitutions paid off as Paulinus Okon doubled the lead in the 63rd minute, scoring with his first touch after coming on.
The visitors made it 3-0 in the 75th minute when another substitute, Michael Okenwa, scored a stunning overhead kick, with Yannick providing the assist.
First Bank pulled one goal back late in the game after Akwa United goalkeeper Aloysius ThankGod was beaten at close range, but the Promise Keepers stayed calm and saw out the match.
Referee Ogundiran Wale and his officiating crew delivered what will rank as one of the most perfect officiating performances in the NNL this season, earning praise from both teams for their control and fairness throughout the encounter.
The win takes Akwa United to the top of Conference B in the 2025/2026 Nigeria National League with 13 points, pending the outcome of the final Matchday Seven fixture between Sporting Lagos and Ekiti United FC.
It was a deserved victory for Coach Paul Offor’s side and a perfect Christmas present for Akwa United supporters.
