Alan Shearer casts doubt on Marcus Rashford’s Euro 2024 England squad Inclusion

Former England international Alan Shearer has raised doubts about Marcus Rashford’s potential inclusion in Gareth Southgate’s squad for the upcoming European Championship this summer.

Shearer expressed uncertainty about Rashford’s role within the national team setup, suggesting that his versatility might not guarantee him a spot in the squad.

In a Q&A session on The Athletic, Shearer responded to a reader’s question about Rashford’s chances of making the Euro 2024 squad. He pointed out that Rashford’s preferred position and role on the pitch are unclear, which could affect his selection.

“If Rashford plays well between now and the end of the season, then that could potentially force the manager’s hand. But I don’t think he’s a certainty to go, no,” Shearer remarked. “He’s not a centre-forward, he doesn’t want to play there.”

Shearer highlighted Rashford’s discomfort playing as a central striker and suggested that his preference lies in a wide forward role. However, with stiff competition from other wingers in the squad, including Jack Grealish, Jarrod Bowen, Anthony Gordon, and Bukayo Saka, Rashford’s place in the final squad is far from guaranteed.

“The problem the wingers have is there are so many of them. Grealish, Jarrod Bowen, Rashford, Gordon, and Bukayo Saka, to name just a few, and so at least a couple of good players could miss out. Grealish and Rashford are definitely under pressure for their positions,” Shearer explained.

Rashford’s performance this season has faced criticism, with concerns raised about his consistency and contributions without possession. Despite his past successes, including a prolific season last year under Erik ten Hag’s management at Manchester United, Rashford’s form has dipped this season.

As Manchester United prepares for crucial fixtures against Brentford, Chelsea, and Liverpool, Rashford will aim to rediscover his top form to bolster his chances of making Southgate’s Euro 2024 squad.

However, Shearer’s comments suggest that Rashford faces stiff competition and must prove his worth in the remaining matches of the season.
