Alaves supporters make vile Mason Greenwood ‘die’ chants during La Liga clash

Getafe’s LaLiga clash with Alaves on Saturday was overshadowed by a disturbing incident involving Manchester United loanee Mason Greenwood.

The match, which ended in a 1-0 defeat for Getafe, was interrupted due to vile chants from the home supporters directed at Greenwood.

The incident occurred at the 18-minute mark when a section of Alaves fans began chanting “Greenwood, die.” The referee, Jorge Figueroa Vazquez, paused the game to address the situation, and the stadium’s public address system issued a warning to the fans of the severity of their actions.

Despite the intervention, the atmosphere remained tense throughout the match, with Getafe’s coaching staff visibly disturbed by the incident. The match itself was largely uneventful, apart from the hostile environment created by the chants, and will be remembered primarily for this unsettling event.

Getafe has yet to decide whether to file an official complaint to LaLiga against the behavior of the Alaves fans. Should they proceed, Alaves could face an investigation and potential sanctions.

Greenwood, who has been working to rediscover his form at Getafe, has faced significant scrutiny and challenges throughout his loan spell. This latest incident highlights the ongoing difficulties he encounters both on and off the pitch.

In terms of the game, Carlos Vicente’s goal in the 12th minute secured the victory for Alaves, moving them two points ahead of Getafe and positioning the teams in 10th and 11th place respectively in the LaLiga standings. With little at stake for either team for the remainder of the season, the match’s significance was further diminished by the unfortunate behavior of the home supporters.
