Alex Iwobi denies playing cautiously at AFCON, applauds goalkeeper Nwabali’s performance

Super Eagles midfielder Alex Iwobi has dismissed claims that he is playing cautiously at the Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON).

Iwobi, a key player for the Super Eagles, also praised goalkeeper Stanley Nwabali for his outstanding displays in the ongoing tournament.

Nigeria has showcased an impressive performance in AFCON, reaching the semi-finals where they are set to face South Africa on Wednesday.

The Super Eagles, last crowned champions in 2013, have won their last four games without conceding a goal, with Nwabali playing a crucial role in this defensive achievement.

While some observers have suggested that Iwobi appears to be more cautious in his tackles compared to the previous AFCON edition, where he received a red card in the Round of 16 against Tunisia, the Fulham attacker refuted these claims.

Iwobi stated, “I have no issues. If that’s how it looks then that’s how it looks; I’m just playing my game.”

Iwobi also took a moment to commend goalkeeper Nwabali, describing him as a “soldier” who demonstrated immense dedication by overcoming an injury to contribute to the team’s success.

Nwabali’s performances have played a vital role in Nigeria’s defensive solidity during the tournament.

As Nigeria prepares to face South Africa in the semi-final, memories of their 2-1 victory in the 2019 AFCON edition linger.

Bafana Bafana will be eager to avenge that loss and secure a spot in the final, setting the stage for an intense encounter.
