Algeria to appoint Vladimir Petkovic as new coach, ending Jose Peseiro links

Algeria will not go ahead with negotiations with Jose Peseiro to become their national team coach with Vladimir Petkovic emerging as favourite for the job.

Algeria’s Football Association is set to unveil Vladimir Petkovic as the new head coach of the national men’s team, bringing an end to speculation surrounding Jose Peseiro’s potential appointment.

Following Djamel Belmadi’s departure after a disappointing outing at the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations, Algeria sought a replacement, initially considering Peseiro due to his commendable performance with Nigeria, guiding them to a second-place finish in the tournament.

However, talks linking Peseiro to Algeria have ceased with the imminent appointment of Petkovic.

Belmadi’s tenure saw Algeria exit the AFCON in the group stage, accumulating just two points from two games, prompting the need for change in leadership.

While Peseiro’s future remains uncertain as his contract with the Super Eagles expired after the AFCON, it is speculated that he might continue with Nigeria, especially with Algeria’s focus shifting to Petkovic. This development is welcomed by the Nigerian Football Federation (NFF), as appointing a new coach for the Super Eagles would entail significant financial implications, unless an indigenous coach is chosen.

With Algeria out of contention, Peseiro’s options for coaching roles are limited, and given his familiarity with the Super Eagles over the past two years, accepting the job would be a seamless transition for him.

The resolution of talks with Algeria provides clarity for both parties involved, allowing Algeria to move forward with Petkovic while potentially paving the way for Peseiro to continue his coaching journey with Nigeria, particularly as they prepare for upcoming World Cup qualifiers later this year.
