Amusan blasts Nigeria’s Athletics federation in Tokyo

Tobi Amusan has slammed the Athletics Federation of Nigeria (AFN) at the 2025 World Championships in Tokyo, accusing officials of neglecting athletes.

The world hurdles champion said Nigeria’s team received substandard kits, just a few basic items in plain bags, compared to the full gear packages handed to teams like the United States.

Her criticism comes amid reports that several qualified Nigerian athletes missed out on the Championships due to registration mistakes and visa failures. Nigeria ended up with only 15 competitors, a smaller squad than many rivals, while travelling with a heavy contingent of officials.

Fans and fellow athletes reacted angrily online, calling the situation a fresh example of corruption and poor management in Nigerian sport. Amusan’s outburst has intensified pressure on the AFN to reform and prioritise athlete welfare.

Nigeria has always been a breeding ground for corrupt government officials. Just imagine more traveling officials with only 15 athletes from a country with over 200million people. It’s a big shame on Nigeria to treat their athletes poorly.
