Arouna Kone Picks Super Eagles, Cote d’Ivoire, Senegal, four others as AFCON favorites
Former Cote d’Ivoire forward, Arouna Kone, has identified the Super Eagles of Nigeria, Senegal, Morocco, and the host country as the top contenders for victory in the upcoming 2023 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON).
Kone, who played for Everton in the English Premier League, expressed his views in an interview with Sport Ivoire. While acknowledging the quality in the Ivorian team, he considered other strong contenders like Senegal, the reigning champions, Morocco, and the host nation.
“I would say at first glance Ivory Coast. I’m not saying it because I’m Ivorian. But I say it because we have quality in our team,” Kone stated. He also highlighted the strong performances of Senegal and Morocco, the latter having an exceptional run in the recent World Cup in Qatar.
“Next to Ivory Coast, there are the Lions of Téranga, reigning champions and the Atlas Lions of Morocco who had an exceptional performance during the World Cup in Qatar.
“After those, there are the natural favourites who will have their say. I want to talk about Cameroon, Nigeria, and Ghana without forgetting Egypt with seven continental titles.
The 34th edition of the AFCON is scheduled to take place in Cote d’Ivoire from January 13 to February 11.
As Nigeria aims for its fourth AFCON title, football enthusiasts eagerly await the thrilling competition that will bring together some of the best national teams on the African continent.
