Arsenal are biggest spenders in Europe after summer transfer window

Manchester United, Manchester City make up top three

Struggling English Premier League side, Arsenal have emerged as the biggest spenders in all of Europe in terms of transfer fee outlay after the closure of the 2021 summer transfer window for most of the major European leagues.

Having already spent an estimated £125 million to bring in Nuno Tavares from Benfica, Albert Sambi Lokonga from Anderlecht, Ben White from Brighton and Hove Albion, Martin Odegaard from Real Madrid and Aaron Ramsdale from Sheffield United, the transfer deadline day move by Arsenal for Japanese defender Takehiro Tomiyasu from Bologna cost the North London club around £19.5 million, took their total outlay to about £145 million.

Manchester United were a close second to Arsenal in terms of transfer fees after they spent £73 million on Jadon Sancho from Borussia Dortmund and £34 million on Raphael Varane from Real Madrid before opting to complete a deal for Cristiano Ronaldo from Juventus for around £19.5 million on the transfer deadline day. Their deals during the summer transfer window cost a total of £126.5 million.

Chelsea ended up in third place after their transfer deadline day loan deal for Spanish midfielder Saul Niguez cost an initial £3.5 million in loan fees. Adding this to the £97.5 million spent on Belgian striker Romelu Lukaku takes the Blues spending to a tidy sum of £101 million.

Manchester City were in fourth place as they completed the most expensive single transfer of any team in Europe by bringing in English midfielder Jack Grealish for a British record fee of £100 million from Aston Villa.

German Bundesliga side RB Leipzig spent a total of over £90 million on new players during the summer transfer window as they brought in Andre Silva, Ilaix Moriba, Mohammed Simakan, Benjamin Henrichs, Angelino, Josko Gvardiol and Camden Clark in a bid to improve on their second place finish in the German Bundesliga last season.

English Premier League side Aston Villa were unsurprisingly one of the biggest spenders in the transfer window as they invested much of the money they got from the sale of Jack Grealish. They signed Emiliano Buendia, Leon Bailey and Danny Ings for a combined sum of around £90 million.

The list of the top ten highest spending teams in the 2021 summer transfer window is completed by Italy’s AS Roma, French sides Paris Saint Germain and Stade Rennais and English side Crystal Palace.
