Arsenal hold Liverpool at Anfield to retain EPL top-spot

Arsenal secured a crucial 1-1 draw against Liverpool at Anfield, ensuring they will top the Premier League table at Christmas. SportsRation reports.

This result came after Aston Villa’s draw with Sheffield United on Friday night, setting the stage for the Gunners to maintain their position at the summit if they earned at least a point at Anfield.

The match marked a return to a ground where Arsenal had not secured a League victory since 2012, adding significance to the encounter. Mikel Arteta, now the manager, was part of the Arsenal side that last won at Anfield in the League over a decade ago.

The Gunners made a flying start, with Gabriel heading home from a Martin Odegaard free-kick in the opening four minutes.

However, Liverpool responded swiftly, and Mohamed Salah equalized within half an hour. Trent Alexander-Arnold delivered a stunning pass to Salah, who skillfully navigated past Oleksandr Zinchenko before delivering a superb finish into the top corner.

Arsenal had opportunities to regain the lead, with Bukayo Saka making a promising run around Alisson. However, he couldn’t get the shot away, and when the ball reached Gabriel Martinelli, his effort went wide.

The balance of the game extended into the second half, with Liverpool missing a crucial chance to take the lead.

Salah set up Alexander-Arnold, who had a clear shot on goal as Liverpool launched a counter-attack with three players free in the Arsenal box. Despite the promising setup, Alexander-Arnold’s strike hit the crossbar, leaving the match finely poised.

The 1-1 draw at Anfield showcased Arsenal’s resilience and determination to maintain their position at the top of the Premier League, heading into the Christmas period with confidence and momentum.
