Aryna Sabalenka: ‘I Feel Refreshed’ after Winning Toronto Opener
Aryna Sabalenka kicked off her Toronto Open campaign with a comfortable 6-3, 6-3 victory over Japan’s Moyuka Uchijima, and said afterwards that she feels “refreshed, recharged and ready to go” ahead of the hard-court season.
The world No. 1 wasn’t at her absolute best throughout the match, but she did enough to secure her 37th win of the 2026 season and book her place in the next round.
After the victory, Sabalenka credited her recent break from the tour for helping her recharge following Wimbledon.
“I went to Vienna before Wimbledon. Then I went to Mykonos after Wimbledon. That was much needed,” Sabalenka said. “I feel refreshed, recharged, and ready to go.”
The Belarusian spent part of her holiday in Mykonos with her fiancé, Georgios, and her dog, Ash, before returning to competition in Toronto.
Asked whether she was happy to be back on hard courts, Sabalenka couldn’t hide her excitement.
“I feel definitely happy to be back on hard courts this season.”
Hard courts have long been Sabalenka’s strongest, and she showed flashes of that form against Uchijima despite admitting there was still some rust to shake off after her time away.
The victory also comes just days after Sabalenka celebrated 100 weeks as world No. 1, another milestone in what has already been an impressive season.
