Ashleigh Plumptre explains WAFCON absence, urges Nigerians to support Super Falcons

Nigeria defender Ashleigh Plumptre has explained why she will miss the 2026 Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON), saying she is still recovering from injury.
The 27-year-old defender was one of the notable absentees when Super Falcons head coach Justine Madugu announced his 25-player squad for the tournament in Morocco.
Plumptre, who played a key role in Nigeria’s successful WAFCON title-winning campaign, said her body needs more time to recover before she can return to action.
In a message shared on social media, the Saudi Arabia-based defender expressed her disappointment at missing the tournament but said she is hopeful of wearing the Super Falcons shirt again when she is fully fit.
“The body is asking for more time and I’m listening ❤️
Sad to be missing this WAFCON yet hopeful in the prospect of getting to fight alongside these women again with the support of Nigerians everywhere when the body is ready to compete again.
So, in the meantime, back these women, back them on their quest for victory once more. Go easy on them, they need you
I am with you ladies
Naija no dey carry last ”
Plumptre’s absence is a blow for the Super Falcons, as she has become one of the team’s most dependable defenders in recent years.
Despite not being available, she has urged Nigerians to give the team their full support as they look to defend their continental title.
The Super Falcons have been drawn in Group C alongside Egypt, Zambia and tournament newcomers Malawi. All of Nigeria’s group matches will be played in Rabat.
The nine-time African champions will be aiming to lift a record-extending 11th WAFCON title when the tournament begins in Morocco.
