Atlético Madrid in talks for Atalanta star Ademola Lookman ahead of summer move
Spanish giants Atlético Madrid have entered discussions to sign Nigerian forward Ademola Lookman from Serie A side Atalanta, with the Super Eagles star emerging as a key summer transfer target.
Lookman, 27, has been in outstanding form this season, scoring 18 goals and providing seven assists in 37 matches across all competitions. His performances have not gone unnoticed, and Atlético are said to be seriously considering a move despite Atalanta’s reported €60 million (£51.5m) valuation.
Talks between Atlético Madrid and the player’s representatives are already underway, according to reports in Spain. Manager Diego Simeone is believed to be a fan of Lookman’s versatility and work rate, and the club sees him as a potential boost to their attacking options.
Although the asking price is viewed as steep, Atlético are monitoring the situation closely and could make a formal bid if conditions become favourable. Lookman is under contract with Atalanta until June 2027, but growing interest from across Europe may tempt the Italian side to cash in.
The Nigerian international has revived his career in Italy following a difficult period in England, where he struggled to make a lasting impact at Everton, Fulham, and Leicester City. Since joining Atalanta permanently from RB Leipzig in 2022, Lookman has registered 50 goals and 22 assists in 110 appearances.
Atlético face competition from several Premier League clubs, including Manchester United, Arsenal, and Chelsea, but the Spanish side are hopeful of convincing Lookman to choose La Liga as his next destination.
While his on-field form has been impressive, Lookman’s relationship with Atalanta boss Gian Piero Gasperini appears strained. The coach publicly criticised the forward after a missed penalty in the Champions League, prompting a response from Lookman on social media.
With transfer talks gaining pace, Atlético Madrid will be aiming to move quickly and secure one of the most in-form forwards in European football ahead of the summer window.
