AWCON 2022: Defending champions Super Falcons drawn against perennial rivals

Tournament set to hold in Morocco from July 2nd

Nigeria’s Super Falcons have been drawn in Group C for their AWCON 2022 campaign in Morocco, and they will be renewing acquaintances with a number of familiar faces.

Super Falcons booked their place in this year’s competition after overcoming the Lady Elephants of Cote d’Ivoire over two legs in the final qualifying round.

Nigeria’s women’s team were placed in Group C of AWCON 2022 alongside the Banyana Banyana of South Africa, Botswana and Burundi. The Super Falcons are quite familiar with the Banyana Banyana, with both sides having faced each other in three separate finals, with the Nigerians emerging winners in all of them.

The other teams in Group C, Burundi and Botswana, are making their debuts in the newly-expanded competition following the decision to make it a 12-team competition from this edition.

Nigeria have won the competition a record 11 times from the 13 editions, with Equatorial Guinea the only other side to have ever won the competition since its inception. South Africa have finished as runners-up a record five times.

Nigeria’s ladies most recently faced Olympic champions Canada in two friendly games in British Columbia, where they drew one and lost one of the games with a weakened squad. They remain firm favourites to claim a 12th crown in Morocco when the tournament kicks off on July 2nd.

Here is the draw in full:

Group A: Morocco, Burkina Faso, Senegal, Uganda

Group B: Cameroon, Zambia, Tunisia, Togo

Group C: Nigeria, South Africa, Burundi, Botswana.
