Balogun suffers embarrassing cup exit with Monaco

Folarin Balogun experienced a rollercoaster of emotions as Monaco suffered an embarrassing exit from the Coupe De France, with the USMNT star scoring a regulation penalty but missing his spot-kick in the shootout.

The match saw Balogun making a significant impact by opening the scoring in the 35th minute with a well-taken penalty.

Released on a brilliant through-ball, he was brought down by the Rouen goalkeeper, and confidently dispatched the resulting spot-kick.

This marked his first start for Monaco since recovering from an adductor injury and his first goal for the club since November.

However, the joy turned to disappointment for Balogun as he faltered during the decisive shootout, failing to convert his spot-kick.

Despite his initial heroics, Monaco was knocked out of the tournament after regulation time ended with a 1-1 scoreline.

The defeat highlighted an overall poor performance from Monaco, who struggled with clinical finishing and composure throughout the match, compounded by adverse weather conditions.

The third-tier side, Rouen, displayed a heroic performance, dominating possession and tempo for most of the game.

While Balogun managed to contribute with a crucial goal, his failure in the shootout will undoubtedly leave him and the team disappointed.

However, Monaco will need to regroup quickly as they prepare to face Ligue 1 side Nice on Sunday, February 11, 2024.

Currently sitting 5th in the French Ligue 1 standings, Monaco will aim to close the gap on their second-placed opponents, trailing by four points.
